Manche Rekorde bleiben. Mit zehn Meistertiteln und sieben Pokalsiegen ist Empor Rostock der erfolgreichste Handballverein der DDR. Und Frank-Michael Wahl ist mit 1.412 Toren in 344 Länderspielen bester Schütze in den Jerseys beider deutscher Staaten.

Erstligahandball zelebrierte Empor nach dem Anschluss der DDR nur bis 1993. Es folgten zehn Jahre in der zweiten Liga, ein Intermezzo in der dritten und weitere zwölf Jahre in Liga zwei. 2017 stieg der Ostseeklub dann abermals in die dritte Liga ab. Am Ende der Saison 2017/18 rangierte Empor dort nur auf Platz zwölf. Um so überraschender, dass sich das Team von Trainer Till Wiechers in der laufenden Spielzeit zum Aufstiegsaspiranten in der Regionalliga Nord mauserte. Aufstieg? »Kein Zwang, kein Muss«, beruhigt Empor-Vorstandschef Tobias Woitendorf Kader, Stab und vermutlich sich selbst im jW-Gespräch. Und ergänzt: »In den kommenden drei bis fünf Jahren wollen wir uns in der zweiten Liga etablieren.«

Die Konsolidierung des Vereins kommt nicht von ungefähr. Im vergangenen November wurden Vorstand und Geschäftsführung der Spielbetriebs-GmbH fast komplett personell erneuert. Sportlich solide, wirtschaftlich solide – das geht nur zusammen. Woitendorf mahnt: »Wir streben nicht den absoluten sportlichen Erfolg an.« Erst müsse der Verein in die Spur. Deshalb werde auch das Ehrenamt großgeschrieben, »keine Eigeninteressen, voll im Sinne der Sache«. Eine Situation wie 2008, als der Klub vor dem Lizenzentzug und freien Fall in die Landesoberliga Mecklenburg-Vorpommern stand, will er unbedingt vermeiden.

Hauptrivale auf dem Parkett ist Eintracht Hildesheim. Die Niedersachsen sind punktgleich mit Empor, haben aber im direkten Saisonvergleich mit einer Auswärtsniederlage und einem Heimremis gegen Empor die schlechtere Bilanz – und die entscheidet bei Punktgleichheit über die Aufstiegschance.

Apropos Aufstieg, einfach ist der nicht. Die Saison 2018/19 ist ein Übergangsjahr. Die Mitgliederversammlung der Handballiga hat den Auf- und Abstiegsmodus geändert, und das bedeutet: Fünf Teams aus der zweiten Liga steigen ab, aber nur drei Klubs aus den vier dritten Ligen dürfen rauf. Liga zwei wird von 20 auf 18 Mannschaften reduziert. Neue Regelstärke, so heißt das. Daraus folgt: Empor würde als Erster nicht direkt aufsteigen, sondern müsste in die Relegation gegen das Topteam aus dem Westen. Das steht mit der HSG Krefeld bereits vor Saisonschluss fest. Siegen die Rostocker, spielen sie zweitklassig. Verlieren sie, müssen sie gegen den Verlierer aus der anderen Relegationspartie zwischen den Ersten der Regionalligen Ost und Süd ran. Wer hier siegt, sichert sich den dritten und letzten Aufstiegsplatz.

Die Ausgangslage ist klar, Empor hat’s in der eigenen Hand und muss sich als »Mannschaft jetzt zeigen«, so Woitendorf. Am Samstag abend hat sie das getan. Robin Breitenfeldt, Rückraum Mitte, sagte nach dem 26:24-Auswärtssieg beim MTV Braunschweig auf jW-Nachfrage: »Wir haben in jeder Sekunde des Spiels die Nerven bewahrt und bis zum Ende daran geglaubt, dass wir gewinnen.« Und Vorstandsmitglied Andreas Meyer dachte gegenüber jW schon an den letzten Spieltag. Am 4. Mai wird Hannover-Burgwedel emfangen. »Getragen von einem enthusiastischen Publikum will die Mannschaft eine phantastische Saison jetzt auch krönen«, meint Meyer. Nach dem Staffelsieg kämen dann aber noch die Krefelder.
