Die kräftezehrende Saison in den europäischen Eishockeyligen ist vorbei, die Besten tauschen nun das Klub- gegen das Nationaltrikot. Heute beginnt in der Slowakei die 83. Weltmeisterschaft. Sie endet am 26. Mai. Die Allerbesten nehmen zunächst nicht teil. Zeitgleich werden in der nordamerikanischen National Hockey League (NHL) die Play-offs um den legendären Stanley Cup ausgespielt.

16 Nationalteams werden bei der WM in Bratislava und Kosice über poliertes Kunsteis gleiten. Deutschland trifft in Gruppe A auf die Mitfavoriten auf den WM-Titel Kanada und USA, Gastgeber Slowakei und Aufsteiger Großbritannien. Finnland, Dänemark und Frankreich komplettieren die Achtergruppe. Auftakt ist am Sonnabend in der Steel Arena von Kosice gegen die Briten. Die spielten zuletzt 1994 in der höchsten WM-Klasse. Auch damals schafften sie den Durchmarsch aus der Drittklassigkeit in die Beletage.

Im Auftaktspiel ist die Auswahl des Deutschen Eishockeybundes (DEB) klarer Favorit. 2018 holte sie Olympiasilber in Südkorea und wurde von Sportjournalisten zur Mannschaft des Jahres gewählt. Bei der WM 2018 landete sie allerdings nur auf Platz elf.

Der größte Erfolg der Briten ist schon eine Weile her, dafür aber unerreicht: Sie gewannen bei Olympia 1936 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Das Turnier wurde gleichzeitig als Welt- und Europameisterschaft gewertet, die Briten holten also das Triple.

Der DEB hat für die WM in die Trickkiste gegriffen und operiert mit einem »modernen Coaching-Ansatz«, wie es heißt. Kari Jalonen, Übungsleiter beim Schweizer Meister SC Bern, wird den deutschen Trainerstab in beratender Funktion unterstützen. DEB-Sportdirektor Stefan Schaidnagel erklärte: »Mit dieser Maßnahme wollen wir ein im Mannschaftssport noch selten praktiziertes System etablieren.« Das Abgleichen von interner und externer Wahrnehmung soll Team und Stab bei der kontinuierlichen Weiterentwicklung helfen. Schaidnagel: »Consulting im Spitzensport wird international zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen.«

Das WM-Programm ist straff: Sieben Vorrundenspiele in elf Tagen. Gleich am Tag nach dem Auftakt geht es für die DEB-Auswahl gegen Dänemark weiter. An der Bande steht als »Headcoach« der Finne Toni Söder­holm. Der Nachfolger des »Erfolgstrainers« Marco Sturm will liefern. Die Spieler müssten jetzt ihre Rollen finden, sagte er nach der Bekanntgabe des 25köpfigen Kaders. »Die gesamte Mannschaft muss letztlich funktionieren.«

Als ehrgeiziges Minimalziel ist das Erreichen des Viertelfinals ausgegeben. Leon Draisaitl, 23jähriger deutscher Topscorer in der NHL für die Edmonton Oilers, sagte im Kicker vom 6. Mai schon mal: »Wenn wir nicht das Viertelfinale erreichen und trotzdem eine gute WM spielen, dann kannst du auch nicht alles schlechtreden.«

Nach der 2:5-Niederlage im letzten Härtetest vor dem WM-Start am Dienstag abend gegen Gruppengegner USA resümierte Söderholm auf dem Onlineportal der Fachzeitschrift Eishockey News: »Insgesamt waren auch einige gute Sachen dabei, aber eine Niederlage ist am Ende natürlich nicht gut.« Eine eher nüchterne Bilanz für eine fast einmonatige Vorbereitungsphase.

Auch der neue DEB-Kapitän Moritz Müller von den Kölner Haien wirkte nach der Partie nachdenklich, zumal im letzten Drittel die Verteidigungsbereitschaft merklich nachließ: »Wir haben sehr viel Talent in der Truppe, ganz tolle Individualspieler. Aber wir müssen einfach begreifen, dass das Spiel ohne Scheibe genauso wichtig ist«, mahnte er auf Sport 1 und fügte an: »Defensive fängt mit dem Scheibenverlust in der offensiven Zone an.« Schaidnagel hingegen will sich die Vorfreude nicht vermiesen lassen: »Wir fahren mit einem positiven Gefühl in die Slowakei.«

Auch bei einem Stürmer der Briten, Robert Lachowicz von den Nottingham Panthers, hat sich »ein unglaubliches Gefühl der Vorfreude« eingestellt. Lückenfüller will das von Pete Russell trainierte Team bei der WM nicht sein, zunächst mal Deutschland Paroli bieten: »Wir glauben, dass wir beim Turnier etwas bewirken können«, sagte Lachowicz auf dem Onlineportal des britischen Verbands. Auch seine Mitspieler treten selbstbewusst auf. Der Waliser Joey Lewis, der mit dem ESV Kaufbeuren in der zweiten deutschen Liga spielt, kennt einen Teil der deutschen Puckjäger und deren Klasse: »Ich denke nicht, dass wir von der weit weg sind.«

Ein echter Prüfstein dürften die Briten am Ende aber doch nicht sein, im letzten Vorbereitungsspiel gegen die gastgebenden Slowaken unterlagen sie klar mit 1:6. »Das Ziel ist es, heimzufahren und sich frühzeitig für Peking qualifiziert zu haben«, sagt DEB-Präsident Franz Reindl, und meint die direkte Qualifikation für Olympia 2022. Dafür müsste die Söderholm-Truppe tatsächlich ins Viertelfinale einziehen.
